New Camera

2 min read
I recently bought a new camera!! It's a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 with an 18x zoom. I originally bought it to spy on girls changing but I've since started putting it to better uses.

I want to thank justthorne for helping me search for this camera. I bothered him for a good month about which camera I should choose and we both finally agreed on this one.

If you all haven't seen Justthorne's work, please do. I will be featuring it here later.

I recently opened a coffee shop in Changsha. I will probably submit a few of the cooler pictures here, but for all of you who just want to see normal pictures - you're welcome to check out my facebook! (Nate James, University of Nebraska at Kearney or UNK )

Basically, no one entered. I promised a prize of a month subscription but since no one entered, I decided to give a year subscription to myself. How do you like them apples?

Photography

I haven't been much for graphic design lately. I finished work on my Unique Boutique's design and I have to code it but I've just lost passion and interest for graphic design for some reason. I still appreciate it but I just don't seem to like to create it anymore - it all just seems so frivolous.

What I have been trying to do is capture life and the crazy-ness that is China. I love going out with my camera and just capturing weird stuff. I want to buy a new camera this summer but I'm not sure if I'll be able to afford it this summer or not. I'm happy with my pocket camera and I can tell I'm getting better, even if it's slowly.

I find myself more and more attracted to street photography although model photography still intrigues me. I try to do architectural stuff but I fail nearly every time.

I still have a few pictures from Changsha and Shenzhen that I'll be uploading. Feel free to take a look.

****Game/Contest--Read Below****

It's the lantern festival in China. This marks the end of the 15-day(?) long Spring Festival celebration. It's usually celebrated by...you guessed it..lanterns, dumplings and scores of fireworks.

The Spring Festival is basically the Chinese New Year celebration and is similar to Western Christmas/4th of July combined. On Spring Festival Eve and the Lantern Festival fireworks are shot in the air for hours at a time nearly everywhere in any given city. It's beautiful.

My camera's out of battery so I can't take pictures of the fireworks. How sad.

GAME/CONTEST

We all have different mediums. Some of us draw, paint, crochet, etc., but it's rare to see unity within the chaos of different trades. However, within each of our respective mediums I'd like to display a theme of some sort. I don't care what you do, I want a wide range of mediums centered around one theme. If you draw..draw. If you're a photographer...photograph. A Poet..write.

So this week's theme is: Lantern.

Within your medium, create something that represents or is linked to the theme of lantern. Be creative.

Link back to me when you finish. Ends next Tuesday (February 17th, American Pacific 12AM). The Winner (of my choosing) will receive a 1-month subscription to DA. All works will be featured on the next journal!

---My Journal---

The tracing policy issued by DA is indeed disturbing.
To be neutral I should post both positive journal entries and negative journal entries about this issue so you can make your own decision but I firmly believe that if you are a professional artist with contracts to clients giving them sole proprietorship of your work - they shouldn't be in a community that encourages tracing of any parts of it.

My reasoning being, some logos etc are so well known that even that piece is copy written and despite DA's policies on it, you can be sued by that company for taking their trademarks. It's not only unethical but perhaps dangerous as well.

Some angry deviants:

On a lighter note,
watching Hell's Kitchen is pretty much watching failure in action. Not the show quality, just people..fucking up...constantly. It reminds me of my job at the movie theater when films used to just snap off the reel for no reason what so ever.

Kings of Leon are magnificent. I urge you to download them.

I have a severe lack of Fantasy novels I can read in China that are in English. I can't read Chinese and so I've resorted to either downloading them or buying them from the internet which is super expensive. Ah well.

I bought some cappuccino from the coffee shop on campus, but I bought a whole foot long bag of it. So delicious.

New foreigners are coming to my school finally and that means I won't be bored for a while. Different cultures=interesting.

Look what it fucking shows when I take a photograph:

Make: Samsung Techwin
Model: <VLUU L730 / Samsung L730>
Shutter Speed: 1/54 second
F Number: F/3.0
Focal Length: 6 mm
ISO Speed: 100
Date Picture Taken: Feb 6, 2009, 2:15:05 PM

Next it'll be telling you what boxers I have on and whether or not I have a stiffy.

I've had 2 favorites within a 24 hour time span and it's one of the first days I've been active in about 6 months. Coincidence?

I wonder if DA uses some type of algorithm that displays active members ahead of others? Strange. Thanks for those, guys. It's so nice to know that I'm appreciated in some ways other than a favorite-giver. :bounce:

What is..a gentleman deviant?

It certainly sounds strange in this day and age, and I'm willing to bet that the term gentleman has been under used as of late. You see. There are no more.

Can you tell I'm sort of an idealist? I've begun to read a book called Mr. Norrington & Jonathan Strange. I picked it up at a Goodwill Store for a dollar. It was casually discarded. It' is a fantasy, a New York Times Best Seller, thick as hell, and the back mentions that it is comparable to the works of Tolkien. Pretty high praise, I thought. Now, whether it's as good as Tolkien, I doubt so far, but it has a certain Middle English charm to it that I find quite appealing. The way they speak and act makes me long for the good ol' days. Everyone is spouting off gentleman this, gentleman that. It made me think...what does it mean to be a gentleman?

I suppose back in the day there were various types of gentleman. Gentleman who did what they did because it was expected of them. Some, I imagine, did it out of their own good will. This makes me think of the 50's in America where agreements were settled with a simple handshake. Yet still, there were others who acted simply like the valley girl fashion whores of our time.

I got to thinking after I coined a new phrase. A Gentleman Deviant.

What type of Gentleman is a Gentleman Deviant. Obviously the term doesn't sound very good when Deviant is applied to it. Rather, it sounds somewhat like a pervert masquerading around as a gentleman. Perhaps it would have been more apt to coin the phrase Deviant Gentleman. No no, that sounds even worse. Certainly, I try to be as gentlemanly as possible but I know I'll never stand up from the table when a woman enters the room. My limits are usually flowers and opening doors but I'm attempting to do the "jacket thing" as well.

I suppose a gentleman used to merely refer to nobility rather than an over abundance of politeness or warmth. However, the term has become to refer to a man of good nature and conduct. Wikipedia says that Chaucer was one of the first writers to use it. Indeed, he may have coined it himself. gentile man was the original spelling.

What it means to me is someone who is polite to his fellow artists, because surely they are working to benefit their art and their colleagues' art for the community experience of it. Friendly, polite critiques. Warm welcomes and thank you's.  I strive to become a Gentleman Deviant, for the sake of the experience and the enjoyment of art.

What do you think?
